August War Commemoration Rally After Nine Year in Manhattan

By Ia Merkviladze, NYC

Exactly nine years have passed since The August 2008 war. Many Georgians currently living in New York and non-Georgians from Pakistan, and Ukraine gathered in front of United Nations to protest the regime of Russian President Vladimir Putin and those who share his imperialist vision.

The protesters exhorted all free people to join in the resistance to the Russian hunger for empire. They believe that only united strength can resist the force of the existing regime.

Speech has been made by US Republican Party member Joseph Concannon (City Council) and the Georgian member Nikoloz Chkheidze (Association "Tvistomi" and "Georgian-American Republican Alliance). Mayoral candidate Nicole Malliotakis who also represents Brooklyn Borough in NY State Assembly, also represents Greece Community, express solidarity with all free Georgians. Malliotakis vigorously opposed the Georgian occupation and supports Georgia’s full sovereignty and its pro- Western aspirations.

Republican Party members spoke about new US sanctions against Russia, and Vice- President Mike Pence visited Georgia in 07.31- 08.01. 17. Although the common belief is that the US will support Georgia not only as a strategic partner for territorial integrity, in fact the United States will stand steadfastly against the Putin regime and its assault on democratic values.

The powerful Georgian national anthem was performed during this meeting. Georgian writer Dato Turashvili spoke. Director Irina Gachechiladze (Red Lab Production) hosted Mr. Turashvili. During his visit he attended the theatrical reading of his play, Iron Curtain performed by the Georgian-American Theatrical Feast. American actors played two Russian soldier's and two Georgian girl’s relationship. Despite they relationship, next dawn Georgian border shifts.

In his speech Mr. Turashvili said that each and every Georgian voice of protest was a vital bulwark against Russian imperial aspirations. He noted that the last 200 years of Russian political subversion did not change the heart of Georgia. He believes that memory of the heroes who sacrificed their lives nine years ago to save our country will always sound the call of freedom - freedom which cannot survive without unity.
